This term from 14 August to 22 September schools across NSW will be participating in the NAPLAN Online school readiness test. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run’ designed to help schools assess their technical and administrative readiness for the transition to NAPLAN Online. students in years 7 and 9 will be participating in the readiness test between Monday 11 September and Friday 15 September 2017. The readiness test will involve students in year 3, 5, 7 and 9 sitting two, 40-minute assessments, a writing test and a combined numeracy/literacy test. (Year 3 students will not participate in the writing test). Student participation in the readiness test is an opportunity for them to become familiar with the NAPLAN Online test format. It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student results It is important to note that participation in the school readiness test has no effect on students’ NAPLAN results from the paper-based tests students sat in May. There’s a lot more information on the department’s NAPLAN Online website

An enthusiastic group of year 9 students have worked collaboratively to code science experiments for the International Space Station.  Students worked with their Science teachers Mr Denley and Mr Worrell as well as with IT teacher Mrs Worthing and IT support Mr White to learn about space and use Python to code their experiments. They used a SAGAN module and Raspberry Pi to test their coding in the classroom. These students were involved in the Cuberider program that draws on a STEM approach to learning.

Fantastic news! Our Indonesian sister-school, SMAN 1 Tangerang, will once again be visiting our school early in Term 4, 2015. The students have a two week program in Australia arriving in Sydney before travelling to South Grafton High School then returning to Sydney for the return flight to Indonesia. This year there will be approximately 19 students aged 15-17 as well as two staff and the Principal.

We are seeking billeting families who are willing to provide accommodation, transport to and from school as well as meals for the visiting students. Could you please consider hosting one (or two) of these students with your family during their visit to South Grafton High School and return this note by the 11th of September. If you require additional information please contact Mr Avery in the Languages staffroom on 66421466.
