Students have the opportunity to gain international qualifications such as Open Water Scuba Diver or Advanced Scuba Diver at South Grafton High School. Scuba Squad has been running since 2012 and over 50 students have gained these qualifications. Some students have even gained entry into sought after tourism courses through their dive qualifications and experience.
The courses are offered at the end of the year where students complete the theory at school, then have a day of confined water training in the pool to learn to use the equipment and feel comfortable under the water. We then go out into the ocean on the beautiful Solitary Islands and practise the skills we have learned in the pool while the grey nurse sharks, turtles and eagle rays go swimming by. There is a large instructor to student ratio so our staff feel confident the students are comfortable and safe under the water at all times.
Students are offered follow-up dives on a regular basis throughout the year where we all get together for dives, even after they have left school.
