Rotary Youth Transition Seminar (RYTS )

Two SGHS students, Caleb Barker and Scott Rose, were involved in a Rotary camp late last year called the Rotary Youth Transition Seminar. The one-week residential camp focuses on the development of skills needed to make the transition from school into post-secondary education and employment. RYTS provides activities related to renting, budgeting, goal setting, career choice and self-confidence. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people aged 16-18 from areas outside of the Clarence Valley, and form a strong network of friends to communicate with. Anyone aged 16-18 can apply for the 2018 program at the end of this year, which is already being planned. More information about RYTS can be found on their Facebook page, RYTS Camp 9640, or their website.

Many thanks to Rotary and the SRC for their sponsorship of this opportunity.

On the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of February, SGHS rowers Caleb Barker, Lex Bagster, Patrick Reilly and Scott Rose competed in the Tweed Heads Rowing Club Regatta and the Northern Rivers Rowing Association Age Championships. All rowers performed well on the Saturday, with Lex and Scott achieving second place in the Men’s Masters Handicap Pair and third place in the Men’s Open Double Scull.

Caleb placed second in the Men’s Open Single Scull and all four boys raced together in the Men’s Open Quad Scull, also placing second. The effort continued on Sunday, seeing Caleb combine with a Coffs Harbour rower to place second in the Men’s Under 19 Double Scull. He also took out first place in the Men’s Under 19 Single Scull. Congratulations to all rowers and thank you to all the parents who helped make it possible. In late February our rowing team will head to Sydney for the CHS State regatta. The SRC has offered sponsorship toward this effort. We wish them every success.

During January, two SGHS students, Myra Cross and Scott Rose, attended The ConocoPhillips Science Experience in Brisbane. The event was hosted by the University of Queensland and Young Scientists of Australia, to promote interest in tertiary education and careers with STEM. The three-day program utilised university resources to present hands-on activities involving engineering, chemistry, neuroscience, soil science, forensics and innovation.

The ConocoPhillips Science Experience is also available in 2019 at the University of New England in Armidale for any students in Year 9 or 10 interested in science, technology, engineering or maths.

Many thanks to Grafton Rotary for their continued support of youth opportunities.
